Porsche 917K no. 18
One of the cars from Le Mans 1970 which have not been made by FLY - and is fairly easy to do
yourself - is the yellow David Piper Porsche 917K no. 18. The var entred by Team AAW, was
driven by David Piper and Gijs van Lennep and started as no. 11, but had to withdraw from the
race after a minor crash.
This is the article about how I made the Porsche 917K no.18.
The Austrian Porsche no. 3 was going to be donor, I grinded the body and spray painted it.
Unfortunately I was not to careful about the red stribes around the doors, so even after a
couple of paint layers the red was still showing - even on the tail wings.
This meant that I had to scratch around the doors with a sharpe knife, but this gave a couple
of nasty cuts which was not so easy to cover with paint. But you have to hold the car in your
hand to see it and you won't notice during races!
The red buttom is handpainted since I had no tape to cover the yellow - but now I just wanted
to finish the car because it took me almost a year to get started! The decals is bought at
Pattos Place and there was enough decals for three cars, so there is enough to have another
go later!
When I had to transfer the decals, I first find some pictures of the original car on the internet
and print them, so I know where the decals should go. I have seen so made models of the car,
where the decals were placed the wrong places or upside down and these faults I wouldn´t
make!
There is only 19 decals for the car, so it can be done in about one hour. Later it is time to as-
semple the car and take some great pictures!
This is the first pictures I took of the car together with the winner from Le Mans 1970 and I
think they match each other great! Now I only have to paint the wheels from Kai, so the car is
ready for the battle of Le Mans Rebirth 1970!
