TEAM SCHUPPAN |
33 |
Originally entered by Team Davey, Vern Schuppan's two cars have come out of the closet now that the race is non- championship. Former works Porsche driver Vern is very close to the factory, and his lead car (#55) is the ex-Andretti family chassis from last year. #33 is a brand new factory chassis, built for this race. The cars should be right up with the lead Joest and RLR 962s, and are top six contenders. Dunlop tyres may be crucial advantage. Hoy is at last getting a break in a decent C1 car, while Alesi, Brabham and Dobson are all Group C newcomers. #33 - Suffered brake problems during practice, and took time to sort 'porpoising' problem. THe team qualified 22nd. Ran just outside top ten after a good opening stint by Hoy, but crashed heavily by Dobson after Arnage when the car was clipped by Wollek in traffic. Lengthy repair job, damage may have contributed to massive fire just before Indianapolis at 20:45. Dobson hit the barrier trying to stop the car, but emerged unhurt from the flames. #55 - Delighted the drivers in practice, where Schuppan placed it on 18th place. Good opening stint, but electronic sensor problem meant Elgh couldn't restart at first pitstop. Thereafter the team fought back up order, delayed when rookie Brabham crunched the nose at indianapolis, and engine stopped on Vern at Mulsanne Corner. One of the quickest Porsches at night, held 4th place in early morning until gearbox change was required. Sat out the last hour of the race, resuming to tour round to be classified 13th. |
