An ambitious five car line-up from 1986 World Champions. Team used to running three cars, but may be stretched all the same. Has struggled with radial tyres in WS-PC, but proven Yokohama crossplies will be used at Le Mans. Le Mans debuts for Sala, Ratzenberger, Huysman and rally driver Sainz, but has benefit of vast experience of Grohs, Larrauri and van der Merwe. Hard to see any of the cars winning, but at least one should make the top ten. #5 - From A-backed car had strongest squad, qualified good 9th on Thursday by Sarel van der Merwe. Spectacular start to race with series of spins, perhaps caused by a gearbox problem, which along with alternator dramas led to retirement in seventh hour. #6 - Le Mans debutant Maurizio Sala and Roland Ratzenberger enjoying experience, Roalnd Ratzenberger relishing Mulsanne in the dark! Maurizio Sala was not so happy after a window blew out and smashed the raiator. Walter Lechner earned 20th slot on the grid. Running just outside top ten when a rear puncture caused irrepairable damage to the body and suspension in foruth hour. #16 - Hydro Aluminium car qualified 27th by ALD C2 man Dominique Lacaud after problems getting boost wasted first day. Early stops with electrical gremlins, and lost ground with suspension damage caused by a puncture. Scraped home in 10th place, just fulfilling Autosport's prediction that one Brun car would make the top ten! #17 - Brand new factory chassis backed by Repsol. Oscar Larrauri was happy with handling, but dissapointed with straightline speed and the choice of team mates Walter Brun and Jésus Pareja! Qualified seventh overall and second Porsche. Quickest in warm-up and ran in top six in the early stages. Throughout the race Oscar Larrauri had to regain time lost by team mates, frequently lapping in 3m23secs, but strong fourth place was lost with engine blow-up on Mulsanne in 17th hour. #27 - Least competitive of the Brun cars, qualified 26th. Never figured in the race, Repsol-backed machine stopping in sixth hour after exhaust breakages. |
