Formula One In The Seventies |
By Holger Thor Nielsen To me the seventies will always stand out as the most remarkable decade in Formula One history. I was in my teens and following the seasons over poor television coverage and thru articles in colourful motor sport magazines in different languages. And I was lucky to attend live to 7 different Formula One races in Europe in the years 1973 to 1977. At the start of the seventies some of the old stars such as "Black" Jack Brabham, Graham Hill and John Surtees were already over the peak of their careers. Others like Jochen Rindt, Jackie Stewart and Jacky Ickx were at the zenith and some again were just beginning to rise like Emerson Fittipaldi, Ronnie Peterson and Niki Lauda just to mention a few. During the decade personalities such as James Hunt, Jody Scheckter and Patrick Depailler came and went again, and at the end of the seventies new stars for the eighties were unfolding like Alan Jones, Gilles Villeneuve, Didier Pironi, Alain Prost and Nelson Piquiet. But it was also a decade were a lot of unforgettable race drivers met their fate on the circuits around the world. Names like Jochen Rindt, Joseph "Jo" Siffert, Francois Cevert, Mark Donohue, Ronnie Peterson among others, are names who will forever shine in the hall of fame. It is not my intention to write an indebt detailed report covering each season nor do I want to write biographies over each of the race drivers. These facts are available in a lot of books and web pages all over the world. What I do want is to divide the seventies into each year and show which cars with modern technology and correct appearance are available to the slot car world today. And to show which of these cars (and drivers) actually drove against each other in which years. I will include a short introduction to how the particular year went for each of the drivers and sum up number of wins, points and places in the end classification. By correct appearance I mean: - livery - race number - drivers helmet - shape and scale of body (more or less) In the years 1970 to 1972 the teams entered their cars individual for each race, so the race number changed from race to race. For these years I will therefore list the drivers with their cars as they ended up in the end classification after each season. From 1973 and until today the cars are entered for the whole season, so they keep the same race number all season long. These years I have listed the available cars according to their race numbers. As (hopefully) more and more Formula One cars from these seasons will be released, it is my intention to update these pages on continues basis. Any correction, addition, remark or comment from you would be much appreciated. Hope you will enjoy them. |
