The first two decades of Formula One
By Holger Thor Nielsen

Born back in 1961 I discovered Formula One in my youth in the early seventies. I was immediately hooked and the sport became a
passion for me until this very day. In another chapter on this site you can read about my all time heroes of these years.

It was first when Cartrix and Scalextric released their Grand Prix Legends and Classic Grand Prix series it opened my eyes for the
fact that in my study of Formula One I had left out almost 20 full years of history. I have now done my home work and over the
last several years read almost any available book, seen plenty of DVDs and studied the entire www to fill this gab in my knowledge.

Surely I can still not claim to have ever seen such a Formula One race from the fifties or the sixties, but nevertheless I dare to
show you my small slot car collection from these two decades including a short introduction to each year and how the single
drivers performed the specific year. And I was present at the Nürburgring in 2004 when Bernd Mailänder drove a few laps in a
Mercedes W196 to celebrate the 50 years anniversary of the victorious Mercedes-Benz come back on Reims, France, in 1954. So
at least I know the sound of the game. And what sound…….

In these years the teams entered their cars individual for each race, so the race numbers changed from race to race. And the
drivers could race for several teams during the same season. That is why I will list the drivers with their cars and teams as they
ended up in the end classification after each season.

In the chapters I divide these twenty years into each season and show which cars with modern technology and correct
appearance are available to the slot car world today. And to show which of these cars and drivers actually drove against each
other in which years. I will include a short introduction to how the particular year went for each of the drivers and sum up number
of wins, points and places in the end classification.

As (hopefully) more and more Formula One cars from these seasons will be released, it is my intention to update these pages on a
regular basis.

As always any correction, addition, remark or comment from you would be much appreciated.

Hope you will enjoy them.
